There are three Checkpoints along the way, breaking up the course in four sections. See the section descriptions below.
Section 1 – North Sydney to Rushcutters Bay
Distance: 12km

Section Elevation Profile (90m top):
In this first section you’ll walk through the city lights and experience the nighttime city buzz past Sydney’s most iconic landmarks. Expect to ascend and decent stairs and some slopy streets in this section. Please pay close attention to the course signage and take guidance of volunteers & traffic marshals when navigating through the city streets, stairs, and laneways.
Starting the journey in North Sydney, St. Leonards Park, heading south around North Sydney Oval towards Miller St. and Blue Point Rd. Dropping down the stairs from King George St. into Lavender Bay, opening up stunning city views of Sydney’s most iconic landmarks. Following the bay around past Luna Park and underneath the Harbour Bridge, before heading up at Broughton Street to cross over the Harbour Bridge. At the southside of the bridge, through The Rocks you’ll drop down towards Hickson’s Reserve and follow the waterfront around circular quay with stunning outlooks on the Opera House.
See the Opera House up close and follow the upper path all the way around the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Continue the journey taking the stairs up Tarpeian Way, walking along the outside of the botanical gardens, through The Domain, towards the majestic classical-style building of the Art Gallery of New South Wales. Turning left at the Art Gallery to head down the sandstone
Woolloomooloo stairs to go past Finger Wharf towards the first Checkpoint at Rushcutters Bay Park.
Section 2 – Rushcutters Bay to Lyne Park

Leaving most city hustle and bustle behind, you’ll be navigating through leafy suburban streets and beautiful bay sides in this second section.
From checkpoint 1, continue through Rushcutters Bay park. Follow Keltie Bay all around to the north end of Yarranabbe Park, where you will look back on the Harbour Bridge and cityscape. Head into the surburb, climbing some slopy streets around Darling Point before turning left on Marathon Rd. and ascending the steep marathon steps. With an opportunity for a toilet stop at Steyne Park, before heading down to walk along the beach front of Double Bay Beach. Continue via Stafford St. towards New South Head Rd. to head around Point Piper, following Wolseley Rd. and Wyuna Rd. Take the stairs down to Wunulla Rd. from where you’ll descend into Rose Bay, following the bay around, bringing you to Checkpoint 2 in Lyne Park.
Section 3 – Lyne Park to Christison Park
Distance: 11.5km

Following the coastline, navigating foreshore tracks and cliff walks bringing you stunning views and adventurous trail paths. In this section, the course also brings you to multiple historic sites in Vaucluse and Watsons Bay. As this may be the most challenging section of
the trail, make sure to mind your step walking along unsealed trail paths. Keep a close eye on signage and stay on the walking track, as in some areas you can be in close proximity to open water access.
From Checkpoint 3, follow the bay around heading up towards New S Head Rd. Continue the footpath and head down to the bottom of Tivoli Ave. Where you’ll pass a beautiful city skyline viewpoint, before heading onto the Hermitage Foreshore Trail. Mind your step as you navigate this stunning and adventurous trail path in the dark. Leafy narrow trails with steps and stairs, bringing you past beautiful beaches and coves. When the pathway opens up at Strickland House Estate, leave the foreshore trail and head up around the estate to Vaucluse Rd. Turning left onto Steele Pt. Rd. following a leafy sealed road around Nielsen Park and along the coast. Loop around Bottle and Glass Rd. through the parkland, before following the main road further up. Note a sharp turn left from Fitzwilliam Rd to cross the Parsley Bay suspension bridge. Heading further north past Robertson Park along the beachfront, taking the stairs up at the end of Marine Parade. Follow Pacific St for a loop around Green Point reserve offering panoramic views of the Harbour and city skyline. Head back over Pacific St. to take Victoria St. and two hairpin turns towards Gap Bluff Rd., your gateway to The Gap. This area is signified by scenic ocean cliffs with a rich history of signal spots, military defence and shipwreck. Follow the well-lit Coastal Cliff walk south, with a good climb in elevation, before arriving for a well deserved rest at Checkpoint 3 in Christison Park.
Section 4 – Christison Park to North Bondi
Distance: 6km

Follow ravishing coastal views and suburban streets in this last section to the finish line. Most will see the sunrise whilst following the stunning cliff walkways to Sydney’s most iconic beach, North Bondi.
From the last checkpoint, continue south past Clarke Reserve towards Diamond Bay Reserve. Where stunning cliff views will open up, and the end is almost in sight with the finish line just tucked behind the gorgeous ocean shoreline. With a part of the Cliff Walk temporarily closed, you’ll walk along Military Road before turning left on Weonga Rd to continue on the coastal path through Rodney Reserve. Via Lola Rd. the path will bring you back to Military Rd, where you’ll follow the footpath around on Wentworth St. Here you’ll have a final viewpoint looking back on the city. From this outlook on the Harbour bridge where you started, you’ll descend through
Hugh Bamford Reserve back to Military Rd. making your way to North Bondi. Cross Campbell Parade and walk along Brighton Boulevard towards the coastline, where you’ll capture the best sunrise snap with finish line in sight. Drop down Biddigal Reserve to head to the beach. Keep walking along the beach, from where you’ll see the buzz of the finish line village waiting for you in the park. At the Bondi Life Saving Club you’ll take the stairs up to cross the carpark into Bondi Park to finish your journey through the night.
